Top Ten Tuesday

Photobucket

I’ve seen several  people do their top ten favorite children’s books recently so I figured I’d add mine to the list. Just like my other top ten favorite books list, I could add so many more books and authors to this list .This list is made up  of books I liked when I was little and books my girls have been really into recently.

Top Ten Favorite Childrens Books

1. The Giving Tree  By Shel Silverstein

2. We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Helen Oxenbury

3. Glitter Critters by Dave Carter

4. My First Little House On The Prairie Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Renee Graef

5. Fancy Nancy Series by Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser

6.Good Night Moon

7. The Mandie Series by Lois Gladys Leppard

mandieseries

This books series was sent to me by my grandmother when we were living in Brazil. We didn’t have a lot of access to good books in English(remember, this was way before amazon. com! lol)  and she was great at finding books she thought we’d like and mailing us boxes of books.  This series is AWESOME. It’s great for the tween girl. It’s a mystery series set in the early 1900’s. Each book follows the life of Mandie Shaw and should definitely be read in order as she solves mysteries, makes new friends and discovers unknown facts about her own family.

8. Olivia series by Ian Falconer

olivia

9. Charlie and Lola series by  Lauren Child

10. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

Another book sent to me by my grandmother. This book is fantasy based and if your children like Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland Or The Chronicles of Narnia they’ll like this one.

It's been a long time since I've read The Giving Tree. I didn't realize there was such a controversy over it. I'll have to check it out again. I do love the book Love You Forever, but I remember the first time I read it thinking, "This is a strange book to read to children" I currently don't have a copy, but I have bought it as a gift for baby showers.

Also some of my favorite books are "Mr. Putter and Tabby" they are the cutest books about a little old man and his little old cat, their adventures and their neighbor Mrs. Teaberry. They are so cute and funny!!
  • Laurie
Melissa- I thought the Love you Forever book was very strange and slightly creepy. :0) Okay I am ready to have a throw down about the Giving tree- bring it on!! LOL!!! I seriously would still cry if I read the giving tree again. :0( I can also see Kaitlyn and Madison getting upset if they heard it. Heck they cry when they see baby pictures of themselves. I have very weepy kids :0)

oh I totally forgot to mention The Skippy Jon Jones series. Have you read those? They are the funniest books ever!!!!
  • Our loves sound much the same!

I adore children's books and as a result started a meme on Friday called "Feed Me Books Friday" Moms post about 1-3 bks that they and their children love and come link up and surf around getting recommendations. I copy and paste the titles and authors to make a library list for that week and it saves me time looking for quality books and alert me to good authors.

So if you're looking for something to post about on Fridays we would love to have you join us. We usually have a theme but you don't have to follow it. I love your list of 10 here! Phantom Tollbooth can be found in many children's live theatre's as well.

I LOVED the Mandie books growing up! They were one of my favorite series. They have made the first one into a movie and I am dying to see it and to see if it is as wonderful as the books were!
  • Trish
My only suggestion is to read the Paper Bag Princess before you read it to the kids. It has a very interesting ending. One you wouldn't expect from a princess book. I think it's great though. It's all about female empowerment :)

@Trish- I haven't read the Paper Bag princess but I'll have to put it on hold at the library! What else does Robert Munsch write? I know we've read something by him recently. "Love You Forever?"

@ Laurie- Do I sense another blow out discussion coming on?lol I do understand why you guys think it's sad. I think it's sadly beautiful. My girls like it too and don't seem to get sad by it. I figured they probably would too. You know what book I actually find so sad and kinda weird I haven't read it to the girls yet? "Love You Forever"!

@Heather- What I do when there are a bunch of titles I want to check out is I make note of them and them ask for them to be put on hold and the library for me. Then when they're available for pick up they let me know. They do all the work of finding the books and I just pick them up!
  • I'll say the same thing I did on Amanda's post today - so many books, so little time!! I wish we had time to discover them all!
  • Laurie
Okay I have to say I agree with Trish, I have always disliked The Giving Tree. I always thought the boy was so selfish. All the tree did was give constantly and all the boy did was take! I don't remember him ever saying thank you. The first time I heard this book as a child I remember crying so hard. I do love all the other books especially the Fancy Nancy ones she is so great!! :0)
  • Aw, I loved the Mandie books too! I can't wait to share some of these with my daughter when she gets a little older. I LOVE Lauren Child and I hope she will too!
  • I LOVED Mandie as a kid! I still have a ton of them and am just saving them until my daughter is old enough to read them!

And I just found one of those FIRST Little House books. I LOVE IT.

    thanks for linking up!

Have you ever read The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch? It is such a funny story. Another favorite of mine is How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

I thought all your selections were great but I have to say I did not like The Giving Tree. I know I'm alone on this one but I felt bad for the tree. The tree gave so much to the boy and the boy never seemed to appreciate it. The tree ended up being a stump and the boy (then man) still used it.The boy went about his life ignoring the tree until the tree could serve a purpose for the boy. I just thought it was sad. I know people see the beauty in how much the tree gave until it had almost nothing left. I can see that too. I just also see how the tree lost himself. It's hard to explain. Oh well.
  • Oh! I had forgotten about The Phantom Tollbooth. My girl would love that one. Heading to Paperbackswap right now. Great list!
