Meet Herbie

If you glanced in  my van  the other day you would see this:

Herbie2

Can’t see it? How about a closer view….

Herbie3

See it? Here, let me roll down my window for an even better view…

Herbie4

Meet Herbie. This is the deer (buck??) Mike shot many moons ago and that now usually hangs  in our dining room. A couple of weeks ago (when we had moving plans) we decided that Herbie should have a temporary home at my inlaws’ house to make our dining room more stream lined. So I loaded Herbie in our front seat and drove Katelyn to school.

Now, remember this…

Herbie3

…..is what others could see. The parents dropping their sweet  children off at school didn’t have the advantage of seeing this….

Herbie

….like you and I do. Oh, and neither did the children for that matter. So, I get out of the car with Katelyn and Madelyn and one of the moms comes up to me and asks   ” Is that a real deer??” and I replied “Well, yes”. Thinking  ” it’s not a fake deer. It used to be real once”. And the mom looked amazed and said          “Wow!”. And it suddenly dawned on me to answer the question a little more clearly so I said ” Well, it used to be real. My husband shot it and had it stuffed and it now hangs in our dining room”. And the mom said  ” Ooooh. Ok.” and to her daughter said ” It’s like what uncle so and so has in his house. It’s dead.”

Did she really think I had a live  DEER in my front seat?? One that was just hanging out in my front seat  not thrashing around and kicking  me to death while I was driving? Really?  This was a total  here’s-your-sign moment in my opinion. But then I remembered that I’ve had many of those moments where I’ve asked a really dumb and really obvious question. So I just laughed it off and thought  “What great blog fodder!”

Herbie is still at my inlaws’ house. I guess we should get him back at some point since he can now resume his place in our dining room. It should be fun driving him back.

In my front seat!

Oh my… the things we do for love! I could NEVER deal w/ that, poor little Herbie… :)

  • G.B.

The Bible says to be honest, so I can honestly say that I think that is SICK!

  • Laurie

Okay that is just too funny!! I wonder what other drivers on the road were thinking of that!! I also am just curious about what is sick about it? Is it the fact that the animal is stuffed? Heck I have seen hunters with whole dead deer strapped to the trunk of their car!! To me that is a bit more weird!! but then again I live with a hunter so nothing surprises me anymore :0)

  • http://cottagecapers.blogspot.com Jessica’s

That is HILARIOUS! I don’t see anything remotely sick about it…it’s just really funny! I’m picturing all those people doing a double take! Good post!

  • http://nhfoodandwhine.blogspot.com/ Sarah

That’s pretty funny – it would make me do a double take.

  • http://lidandthekids.blogspot.com Lydia

Nothing sick about that! If deer weren’t hunted (legally) then there would be a severe overpopulation leading to numerous wrecks which means property damage and deaths. And if some choose to mount theirs then that’s their choice. Melissa isn’t asking us to hang it in our homes, just sharing a funny story.

Melissa, I thought it was a real deer that was standing outside your car and the reflection made it look like it was in the car. haha

  • SimplyMel

@G.B- thanks for commenting. I’m sorry you feel that way. This post was meant as a humorous story. A trip to take a stuffed deer to a different location turned into a funny incident. If it’s hunting you have an issue with then we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.
You’re right, the Bible does speak about honesty. It’s also says to “speak it in love”. I think you must have missed that part.

Have a good day and ,again, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

Funny post. Nothing sick about it.

The Bible does say to be honest. It also talks about our words being “pleasing in His sight”. I don’t think going on a public blog forum when someone posts a cute, funny story that coming on here and obnoxiously calling them sick and using the Bible as your backup is pleasing in His sight. Do you? He also says that HIS words “are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times” – if you’re emulating Jesus and the Bible, this is not the way to do it. One last verse: Proverbs 12:16 “A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult”. Based on this verse, YOU are a fool. You should read your Bible more often G.B.

Great post Mel! I would have been doing lots of double takes myself!!

  • G.B.

Well then based on that verse, YOU’RE a fool as well for showing your annoyance with me.

  • http://www.perrymanponderings.blogspot.com Stephanie Perryman

Yes B.G. – you are right. I read later that the Bible says not to argue with a fool or you might look like one yourself. I should have read that before responding to you. Dang it! I did it again!

  • G.B.

So much for turning the other cheek.

  • Kara

Gotta love a heated blog… love that people always have to put their two cents in, assuming they are always right, instead of just staying quiet and moving along! A light-hearted funny story that made everyone in the office laugh today, Mel! Keep up the good work :)

  • SimplyMel

I’m truly honored that you all chose my blog to have a heated discussion on. I think it’s great! lol Thanks for the “defending me” comments everyone. You rock!

And props to G.B for not commenting anonymously.

  • Celesta

Wow… I can’t believe people would comment with such mean things on a blog… You don’t have to like what other people write and think, and if you don’t like it… Don’t read it. I am just so in awe….

  • Celesta

By the way… I was just wondering… How was the post not honest? Just curious?

  • Laurie

Wow who would have thought one dead deer could cause so much discussion :0) crazy. I think Herbie should stay at your in-laws he is obviously a trouble maker!! LOL

GB- I’m still curious which bothers you more the hunting, stuffing, or Herbie going for a drive??

  • empathy

Herbie is dead and he should not be used for anything funny. Bury him as you would anyone who has been killed.

  • G.B.

    It’s all equally sick.

  • SimplyMel

@empathy- thank you for commenting. I like animals but believe animals and humans are not in the same category. You said ” bury him as you would anyone who has been killed”. He’s not an “anyone”! If I thought like that about every animal I saw I’d be stopping on the road all the time to bury critters that have been run over. Too many people put more emphasis on animal rights than they do human rights. I choose to focus my concern on babies being aborted, children living in poverty or being abused, sold into slavery or prostitution. That’s not to say I don’t care about animals. I just don’t think they are in the same arena as humans. I know hunting is a heated topic and I’m afraid there will be no resolution to that debate. I think hunting is fine for animals, like deer, who have a threat of overpopulating. I would never condone hunting any kind of animal that is under possibility of extinction. I also don’t condone animal cruelty, dog fighting rings etc.

@G.B- thanks once again for commenting. You have made it very clear you think it’s all “sick”. Care to join the discussion with your personal reasons behind WHY you think it’s sick?

  • scott

I think its a shame about the deer…..Mike should have aimed for a bigger one :D

  • SimplyMel

lol Scott. Them there’s fightin’ words! HAHA! ;o) Thanks for stopping by!

  • Tina

I say Herbie is lucky. He provides joy and pride. He even has a name. At least he isn’t hanging on the wall all dusty being refered to as that dear I shot once while hunting. I bet Mike has a great story to go with his trip. Now you have this story to shate about your beloved Herbie. And just for the record, I am not a fan of hunting, but I understand why it is done. I also understand that there will always be something I do that someone doesn’t agree with. It doesn’t make me unlikeable or sick. It makes me different and that is what makes life interesting. Mel, thanks for sharing your funny story. Laughter makes us feel better and don’t we all need that these days?

    :)

  • SimplyMel

Well said, Tina!! Thanks for the comment. And Mike does have a great story about that trip. Herbie is his pride and joy! Well, beside me and the kids, of course ;o)

  • G.B.

@”G.B- thanks once again for commenting. You have made it very clear you think it’s all “sick”. Care to join the discussion with your personal reasons behind WHY you think it’s sick?”

No thanks. I don’t really have much desire to socialize with any of you. I was just answering a direct question.

And if people can’t already understand why a post like this is sick (regardless of your opinion on hunting) there isn’t much I can say to explain it. It’s like trying to explain color to someone who has been blind all his life.

Enjoy your blood sports and the thrill of the kill. Personally, I’d rather save lives.

  • Kara

I love Bloodsport! Great movie! circa 1988… Jean Claude Van Damme! YUM!!

  • SimplyMel

@G.B- Yes, saving {human} life is a very noble thing. Please do as much of that as you can in whatever capacity you serve. I hope you’re a vegetarian or else this whole discussion would be a little hypocritical, dontcha think?. Adios!

  • Celesta

Wow GB…. nice comment… You would rather save lives… I am a neonatal icu nurse and I save 1 lb babies everytime I am at work, AND I am not opposed to “hunting”, so… To each there own. I think it is great you feel that way. But you can help and save people and hunt. And seriously, you don’t even know Melissa, WHY do you care so much about this blog?

  • Karina

Ok, I will admit that I haven’t read all of the previous comments, because after the 10th or 11th one, I got really mad and didn’t even want to bother. Here’s my opinion: I’m not a very religious person. I’m Catholic but I’m not as familiar with the Bible as I “should” be. But my parents raised me well and this is what I grew up to believe: “LIVE AND LET LIVE”. In my opinion, this is what that means: Be kind to other people. Raise your children to be kind to other people. Let people live the way they want to. As long as they’re not hurting anybody else, they’re doing fine. And you know what, GB?? It’s people like YOU that have prevented me from being more religious. I see people like you using the Bible to your own mean and judgmental purposes and it makes me kinda sick. Just sayin’…

Melissa, I LOVE your sense of humor. While I know that I could never pull the trigger on a deer myself (and you probably couldn’t either), I have many friends that hunt and I do think that it’s a “food chain” thing. Nobody needs to be judged for hunting animals. Now, if Mike was out shooting PEOPLE and mounting their heads on your wall, that would be different, right? LOL…I’m sorry…was that out of line?

  • SimplyMel

Thanks @Celesta and @ Karina! Karina,I agree with you about using the Bible and religion for judgmental reasons. The Bible is God’s Word written directly to us. It’s abused so many ways. Unfortunately it’s mostly abused and misused by Christians! People who do that make Christians like me, my family and many of my friends look bad. There’s so much more to our faith than the bad light that many ignorant people cast us in.

  • http://www.perrymanponderings.blogspot.com Stephanie Perryman

Ladies, I think the problem here is that we’re having a battle of wits with an unarmed person – which is impossible. If G.B. wants to hide behind the anonymity of the internet and spew her cowardly attacks on people but then won’t explain herself, there really is no point in trying to discuss this with her. People get all brave and gutsy when they can attack someone online and not have to be face to face with the people they are attacking. That’s easy – like a 15 year old bully picking on toddlers. Anyone can be big bad and mean online. The problem is that someone like this obviously really has no life or friends. I mean, she doesn’t know Melissa but has spent a good amount of her time reading Melissa’s blog and commenting. She says she wouldn’t socialize with any of us, yet she is taking the time to make so many responses and be nasty, which IS socializing – online. Therefore, I have to deduct that this person has nothing better to do then find random blogs online that have things she disagrees with, then blow them out of proportion (blood sports and the thrill of the kill…seriously???), start drama online (because she has no real life to have drama in) and be a bully (a bad one at that) with nothing to back up her statements. bleh…I thought maybe she might have some big, eye-opening argument or strong comeback. But no. Nothing, zilch. nada. nothing. How boring. On top of all that, she makes Christians look like morons. Thanks a bunch!

  • Matthew Puckett

G.B. I highly doubt you like my room then….theres more than one deer on the wall and I got a freezer full of it!! Yum, I think I’ll go eat some now….

  • Celesta

    Hi-5 Steph!!!!

  • michelle moody scarboro

Well melissa in most parts of nc, this is common, my inlaws have deer heads all over the place!

  • Karina

Haha…YEAH STEPH!!! You hit the nail on the head. GB, it’s fine if you have a different opinion than many of us. The world would be very boring if we all had the same ideas and opinions. So, you are offended by the practice of hunting. But there’s such a thing called “debate”. If Melissa’s post upset you, then leave a KIND comment about why you’re upset. Do NOT attack someone you don’t even know. Kindly explain how you feel about it, and more than likely someone will respond kindly to you. But quoting the Bible for your own selfish purposes? Not cool.

Sadly, I think I’m probably wasting my time by commenting, because I’m only adding fuel to the internet fire that GB started. Sometimes when people lash out in anger on the internet, the only way to handle it is to ignore it entirely. Some people seem to thrive on creating drama and controversy!

  • christina

Wow, I missed all this! Just read it now. Way to go, ladies, your responses to GB were great! Some people just have to criticize others to make themselves feel better. It’s actually relly sad. We should have pity on GB and ask for our Lord to help her to become a better person…

  • SimplyMel

Haha! Thank you everyone for commenting. GB did manage to drive lots of traffic to my blog! So, thanks for that. I don’t think that’s the result they were probably hoping for…
Yes, Steph, I think it’s very easy to be big, bold and bad on the internet. There are so many other topics that are much more worthy of time and debate. And like you said “blood sport and thrill of the kill?” Over ONE deer? I wasn’t offended. I think it’s funny! Talk about over dramatizing…
If we can give GB a little excitement in his/her day (still not sure if GB is a man or woman..)so be it. I too was expecting a challenging comeback. However, I have pretty much heard every debate over hunting and am still not convinced is a horrendous, hideous, go-straight-to-hell-and-do-not-pass-go thing. To each his own on that topic!!

Now I’m going to post my Valentine’s post. Talk about anti climatic…lol

  • http://blog.patrianoceu.org Katie

Wow, I just wandered over here and am a bit flabbergasted by this discussion. When I saw GB’s original comment, I thought it was a cute joke. I mean, what isn’t a bit “sick” about a dead animal hanging out in a car and people mistaking it for a passenger (for the record, I have no moral opinion on hunting, neither for nor against). So I’m wondering if you all already know her better than that, or if she just struck a sensitive chord to get all this reaction. Fascinating…

  • Laurie

GB- Hunting does actually save lives!! Did you ever go to Long Island in NH- it was an island in which the people who lived there were completely against hunting. The island ended up being so over populated with deer that they began starving to death. It was so sad to see. These deer were so emaciated that they would walk right up to people looking for food. Their ribs were almost poking through their skin and all because some well meaning people thought hunting was cruel. It got so bad that they finally had to send in a sharpshooter to kill most of the population so that others could survive. They now have a hunting season because they realize that keeping the population low helps animals to survive better. If there was no hunting seasons we would be overrun with these animals and they would be in the streets causing accidents in their search for food and inevitably injuring or killing people. So I guess hunting does save lives. Good luck with your vegetarian life along with your job that must either be a nurse, doctor, EMT, paramedic , police officer, firefighter etc. (since you save lives.) My husband will continue to hunt and keep the roads safe from too many deers and by doing so keep you safe while on the roads. He will also continue to save lives as a Firefighter.

    Well, Flip my Flapper….
You have got yourself a troll.

You are in the big leagues now!

I thought the story was pretty funny. I know if I saw that deer in your window, I would have done a double take.

    LOL!

  • Debra

Oh my word. I took a break from unpacking from vacation and decided to get caught up on your blog. (We didn’t get a good internet connection where we were staying). Your story totally cracked me up. How funny to see a dead deer in someone’s front seat. And all these posts about hunting because of it. Oh my, are you serious! I’m sitting here laughing out loud and Ronny is wondering what is so funny! Keep up the great posts Melissa!
