Top Ten Favorite Smells (Top Ten Tuesday)

I swear since I’ve had children my sense of smell has gone into overdrive. I swear I have super smelling capabilities. It’s not always a go0d thing. For instance, when I’m the only one in the room who smells my daughter’s poop in her pants.  When I’m pregnant, everything smells like pee. When I mop the floor in the kitchen I can’t go in there until it’s completely dry or else I smell urine. And sometimes, even then, there’s still a lingering smell so I spray half a can of Lysol to get the smell out. If I don’t do that I throw up. My mother in law (who is an extremely clean person) had to give me a paper plate at dinner once because the dinner plate she gave me, fresh from the dishwasher, you guessed it, smells strongly of pee. I was gagging and getting ready to upchuck.  She graciously did not get offended and gave me a scentless paper plate instead.

Anyway, my super sense of smell also allows me to enjoy pleasant smells all the more. Here are my top ten  favorites in no particular order

Simply Mel’s Top Ten Favorite Smells

1. Coffee

2. Freshly bathed babies and children

3. Men’s cologne

4. Fresh bark mulch

5. Bleach

6. Christmas candles (Fern and Evergreen scents)

7.Pumpkin Spice Candles

8. Fresh cut grass

9. Brownies baking (well, any baked good for that matter!)

10. The scent of Pampers Swaddlers diapers

Ok, I get that this one is weird so let me explain. When my first daughter was born the hospital used Pampers Swaddler diapers. Those diapers have a strong, unique scent that always reminds me of  the euphoric time after my daughter’s birth. It brings back great memories. I’ve been caught sniffing other people’s ( Friends! Not strangers!!) Pampers  just for the smell!

I’ve seen several  people do their top ten favorite children’s books recently so I figured I’d add mine to the list. Just like my other top ten favorite books list, I could add so many more books and authors to this list .This list is made up  of books I liked when I was little and books my girls have been really into recently.

Top Ten Favorite Childrens Books

1. The Giving Tree  By Shel Silverstein

the giving tree

2. We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Helen Oxenbury

3. Glitter Critters by Dave Carter

4. My First Little House On The Prairie Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Renee Graef

5. Fancy Nancy Series by Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser

fancy nacny

6.Good Night Moon

goodnightmoon

7. The Mandie Series by Lois Gladys Leppard

mandieseries

This books series was sent to me by my grandmother when we were living in Brazil. We didn’t have a lot of access to good books in English(remember, this was way before amazon. com! lol)  and she was great at finding books she thought we’d like and mailing us boxes of books.  This series is AWESOME. It’s great for the tween girl. It’s a mystery series set in the early 1900’s. Each book follows the life of Mandie Shaw and should definitely be read in order as she solves mysteries, makes new friends and discovers unknown facts about her own family.

8. Olivia series by Ian Falconer

olivia

9. Charlie and Lola series by  Lauren Child

charlieandlola

10. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

phantomtollbooth

Another book sent to me by my grandmother. This book is fantasy based and if your children like Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland Or The Chronicles of Narnia they’ll like this one.

Welcome to another week of Top Ten Tuesday hosted by Amanda at Oh Amanda. My top ten this week is all about my resolutions goals this year. If you’re like me your resolutions turn into attempts which turn into….nothing. I don’t think we should give up on resolutions just because we may not achieve all, or in some cases, any(!) of them. It’s still good to have goals.

Simpy Mel’s Top Ten Resolutions Goals for 2010

1. Stop Lessen Yelling.

I’m ashamed to admit it, but, I’m a YELLER. I yell when I’m angry, stressed or frustrated. I yell at my kids and my hubby. I want to stop doing that.

2. Make a new friend. And possibly a close, real relationship.

Sounds easy doesn’t it?  Trust me, it’s not.

3. Not lose any weight whatsoever.

See what I just did there? I’m trying to psyche myself out. If I put that I don’t want to lose any weight maybe my body will rebel!!

4. Laugh more. Stress less

5. Get pregnant

No explanation needed for that, right?

6. Declutter my house and my life

I truly believe what Niece on “Clean House” always says ” Clutter on the outside is an expression of clutter on the inside” (or something like that!) Not only do I have too much clutter in my house I have too much clutter in my life. Needless worry and attention on stupid stuff . Needless frustration with relationships I don’t need or want in my life! Be gone!!

7. Not exercising at all. Ever.

Another psyche out…..

8. Become a prayer warrior.

I want to pray more! I do pray and I do trust God with my life but I know I don’t take near enough advantage of the power and privilege I have of being able to come before the throne of God and put my praises and requests before Him.

9. Have dinner at our dinner table more and include family devotional time.

With Mike not usually here for dinner the girls and I all too frequently sit in the living room and have dinner in front of the t.v. I can’t change the fact that Mike isn’t home for dinner but I can certainly make dinner more of a family affair. Right now I”m going to shoot for having dinner at our dining room table at least 3 times a week. Once I get that down I’ll shoot for 5 nights a week. During dinner I want to read a couple of Bible stories and go over Katelyn’s Awana verses. It’s the perfect time to do it. And maybe during that time I can teach them good manners! Or is that a lost cause right now….?

10. Create a better daily routine.

I want to work on creating a good, solid daily and weekly routine(housekeeping chores, menu planning, better attention to our finances) that will help me be more disciplined with my time. In doing so I want to be able to get to bed earlier so I can get up before the girls to take back my morning quiet time! Oh, how I’ve missed it…..

Wish me luck and throw in some prayer for me if you think about it.

I just discovered this fun meme through Heather and it’s from this fun blog- Oh Amanda.

Here’s my top ten for this gloomy Tuesday:

The Top Ten Most Annoying Children’s T.V Shows

This morning listening to my girls watch “Sid The Science Kid”, I thought, oh my goodness, Sid is sooooo annoying! I can’t stand his facial expressions and his mannerisms. I know, he’s just an animated character, but still. This is not to say I don’t think it’s a good show. This got me thinking that I find many of the children’s shows on t.v  annoying, which led me to this top ten list.  So, number one on my list today is. ….(These are randomly listed. Not in order of most annoying)

1. Sid The Science Kid

2. Jay Jay The Jet Plane ( Herky’s rolling ‘R’s”…. need I say more!) All the planes have annoying facial expressions too. This show is superrrrrrr annoying! I’d probably say this show is the most annoying!

3. Caillou- My girls LOVE Caillou. This show will not be leaving our house any time soon. But, watching  a bald little kid who gets to go first for everything, who’s ideas are always the best,  has an annoying voice and is whiny is not my idea of fun. I’ll settle for listening to him…in another room. Oh and I don’t get Rosie. Is she a toddler (like, two years old?) or is she older? One second she’s using baby language and the next she’s drawing perfect flowers and cutting them out. So, which is it? Or are the creators of the show not aware of developmental stages?

4. Fresh Beat Band- Ok, so the music is fun and it makes my girls dance like crazy all over the living room. I think the acting is terrible. But the show wasn’t created for me so I’ll give it a slightly annoying review.

5. Max and Ruby- It breaks my heart to put this show on  my list. I actually think this show is cute! But, Ruby’s bossiness starts getting on my nerves after a while. I joined the group ” Where The H***Are Max and Ruby’s Parents” on Facebook several months ago. Seriously, where the heck are they? Why is their grandmother, Mrs. Huffington and their Bunny Scout leader the only adults in their lives? Why is Ruby putting Max to bed all the time. And dressing him?

6. Dora- Another show I think has it’s good points but I find generally annoying. Boots’ shrieking monkey sound (that sounds nothing like a real monkey) makes me want to put my fist through the t.v every time I hear it. Oddly enough, I don’t find her cousin Diego annoying.

7. Barney- I don’t think I need to explain this one…

8. Blue’s Clues- Steve’s acting grated on my nerves and I was happy to see him go. My girls never really watched this show but I caught it enough flipping through the channels to make me never want to watch it again.

9. The Wiggles- Again, kids love them. Their songs stick in my head after a while and I find that annoying! Katelyn used to love this show around two years of age. But now she hates them. I actually need to get rid of my Wiggles DVD’s now. Madelyn has never watched them.

Anyone want to buy some “Wiggles” DVDs from me? Anyone?

10. Teletubbies- Just their names are annoying!! And those giggly sounds they make the whole time are enough to make you want to stick a fork in your eye. And what’s up with the creepy baby sun? Seriously? The whole show is creepy weird if you ask me.

Do you have a Top Ten? Link up to Oh Amanda’s meme!
